With grit and determination, I am aiming to play golf in college.
My name is Ronald Deramus, and I will be a junior next fall at Idabel High School, located in southeastern Oklahoma. I have been an athlete nearly all my life, playing on school football and basketball teams. Until my freshman year, I had only played golf occasionally with my dad, and at local summer tournaments. I found that I really enjoyed it, and I can play it as an individual and with a team. Since then, I have poured all my time and energy into learning and practicing with the club elders. In one year, my tournament average improved from a 110 to an 86, and my best score at my home course is 79. My goal this year was to qualify to play at regionals and I did that. I am the first bag on my team, medaled 4 times in this seasons tournaments, and earned the MVP award at school. This summer, I am working with a PGA coach and will attend instructional camps, and play nearby tournaments. When I graduate in 2026, I want to play college golf, in Oklahoma or out of state, and hopefully receive the honor of a golf scholarship. Currently, I plan to study business and am looking into career opportunities in the golf industry.
I also ran on the varsity cross country team and qualified to run at regionals this past season. The coach recruited me by promising that it would help my golf game. Come to find out, I enjoy it, and am working towards lowering my times and being a team leader. My overall athleticism continues to improve since I have incorporated running and weights into my regular daily routines.
Even though I choose to focus mostly on athletics, I try hard to keep my grades up and turn in assignments on time. I am liked by my teachers and stay out of trouble. Now, at the end of my sophomore year, I have maintained a 3.2 gpa. I understand the importance of grades and test scores and am studying to prepare for the SAT test this fall. I am a very trustworthy person, and have been raised to know that dreams are achieved by working hard and believing in myself. Just like the club elders have helped me improve my game, I work with the younger players during the summer improve their game and encourage them to play competitively.
I think I found golf at the exact right time in my life. When my friends were making choices that would limit their future, I chose to turn towards golf and not repeat their mistakes.
From this game, I have learned lessons I will use all my life. It has taught me to keep a steady head and the right attitude so that I can recover from a setback. Because in life and in golf, sometimes you aim for the hole, but you hit in the trees. It’s up to you to decide when the game is over.
Although I now regret not playing more when I was younger, I am glad I found my passion and have the opportunity to play competitively in high school and hopefully in college. I have worked extremely hard to get to where I am now, without years of playing and coaching behind me. I am excited to find out just how much I can improve, learn, and see as a player this year and reach my goal to play at the state championship next spring.
