My name is Gabriel Hernandez, I am currently a Junior at Woodburn High school.
I am fairly new to golf compared to many of my team mates. I first joined golf my freshman year. I originally only joined because a friend was going out for the team. I ended up finding a sport that I excelled in and am passionate about. My first year I made the varsity team. I have played for the Woodburn High school Golf team for two year now and earned my varsity letter both years.
In addition to playing on the high school team I have become really involved at the Oregon Golf Association golf coarse. I have assisted the Golf pro and helped teach the First Tee Summer program for the past two years. This was a fun opportunity that allowed me to share my love of the sport and teach young people the skills and rules of golf. I have also joined the Evans Caddie program assisting members and sharing my knowledge of the coarse challenges and obstacles, as well as meet a wide variety of people from the community.
This past summer I have become a member of the Oregon Junior Golf and Youth on Course program. I played several junior tournaments through out Oregon. This has helped me improve my score, lower my handicap and gain confidence in my game.
Golf has influenced my life and has shaped me as a person. I started out without direction and goals, feeling like I was not really good at anything. Since I began playing golf I have found I have many things I am good at and have became confidant in myself. I know the type of life I want to lead and have a plan for my future and the drive and support to reach them. It is a great feeling.
My current academic goals are to work hard at getting the best grades I can to improve my GPA. I would like to eventually pursue a career in the medical field as an Optometrist. I know this will not be easy. I will have many obstacles to overcome.
