My name is Michael Wetmore, I have been playing golf since I could walk. When I was little my father would bring me into the backyard and teach me how to swing a golf club starting with those little plastic clubs. Eventually, as I grew and got older, my father would bring me to the golf course with him to get some real practice in. From the ages five to fourteen, I played golf at this little six hole golf course called Silver Spring and it is where I grew to love the game. Throughout my years playing at Silver Spring, the people we would play with would comment on my swing, always mentioning how they were waiting to see me on tour. At that point was when I realized I needed to play at the highest level.
I have been involved with golf by more than just being a player, I have been caddying since the spring of my sixth grade year. This has helped me grow exponentially as a person. While spending years caddying, I have interacted with all different types of people and have enjoyed it thoroughly. It has really taught me to be respectful to all, and it helped me to where I am now with being able to have a conversation no matter who I am talking to. I am a very social person and I'm not afraid to start a conversation with anyone. Caddying has also helped me tremendously with my golf game. I caddied at Metacomet Country Club, which is also known as the course that was bought by Brad Faxon and has since been sold to a developer. The thing is, this club had some very good golf players, where many players had been helpful enough to teach me the small things about the golf game. I've had the pleasure of caddying for the 2020 RIGA champion, Jamie Lukowicz and just watching players of this caliber helps to learn.
Fast forward to the spring of my eighth grade year, I participated in my first U.S. Challenge Cup tournament at Rehoboth Country Club. As this was my first tournament, I was not sure of how I would perform. I ended up shooting a four-over 75 with a lost ball on the 17th hole (which we later found) and was an alternate to play at Torrey Pines. The only lessons I had taken prior to this tournament was at this little par 3 golf course in Providence, Rhode Island named Button Hole when I was around the age of 9. This year has been the first time in my life that I have even taken lessons. My father has brought my golf swing to where it is today. With some small tweaks by my golf coach CJ Talbert.
Academically, I have done fairly well. I was a straight A student through middle school and high school my GPA has been an 88.15 out of 100. I take all honors, AP and EEP classes and push myself to take the classes that will set me up best for college and life.
My regular day consists of going to school. and as soon as I get out, going to the golf course to play and practice. I enjoy practicing my golf game because getting to see the results of putting in hours of work is very satisfying and worth it. I am constantly looking for more ways to improve my swing, getting to hit the ball farther and straighter. As for practicing my short game, I will spend any amount of time feeling that putter go through those tightly set golf tees on either side.
