I first skated at the age of 3.5 and started playing organized hockey a year later. I played a few years in Canada where I developed a style that relies on hitting, checking and moving the puck quickly. I have mostly played defense and feel that it is the position that is crucial to the success of an offensive drive, just like a quarterback in football. I also play roller hockey which compliments my ice game in the sense that it helps develop stickhandling skills, but I find that most roller players develop a style that relies heavily on time and space which is more of a premium in ice hockey. My style of play would best fit a team that is gritty and physical.
I also pride myself in contributing to a teams success by doing all these little things that might go unrecognized in the statistics or highlight reels such as hitting, clearing the crease, and moving that puck. In this way, I feel that I am a team player. Furthermore, I prefer teams where this kind of attitude is pervasive. I also enjoy practices as much as games. For the last two years, I have played both club and varsity hockey so I have on-ice practice 4-5 times a week and play 50-70 games in a season (including tournaments and what not).
Beyond hockey, I am interested in studying sports medicine or physiotherapy. I have taken a sports medicine course in high school which I found to be interesting and enjoyable. My mother is a lead nurse in the operating room at a major San Diego hospital and has fostered my interest in this area. I am slated to spend this upcoming summer volunteering at the hospital learning more about this field.
