I started playing ice hockey when I was 9 years old, and soon realized I had a lot of catching up to do. Although it was difficult in the beginning, I believe that starting to play the game later than many of my teammates has had its advantages for me. I had to work hard. I believe that I have a better understanding of team play and positioning than many of my teammates who started playing years before I did. Now, after several years of hard work, I am a very strong skater with an instinct of knowing where my teammates are on the ice. I have an exceptional eye, and natural ability, for passing. Along with training on the ice, I have been working with a strength and conditioning coach since July 2016. It has made a significant difference in my game.
Hockey has taught me the benefit of perseverance and hard work. I have seen what a difference working out and extra ice time have made in my game, as I continue to work hard and improve. Hockey has also taught me how to listen to, and take advice. I learned this by listening to my coaches, and found success when I did what they told me to do.
I am currently taking flying lessons to obtain my private pilot’s licence. I have set a goal to take my first solo flight as close to my 16th birthday as possible. I plan to obtain my commercial pilot’s license by the time I am 18.
I believe that a team has to play as a team, supporting one another and creating opportunities for one another, in order to be successful. I would like to be part of a successful college team while pursuing my goals in aviation.
