My name is Ty Ferguson and I am a 15 year old goaltender with the U18 tier one Carleton Place Canadians men's hockey team. My goals include playing tier one NCAA hockey in the future while achieving a kinesiology degree. My ultimate goal in sports would be to play professional hockey in the future and I believe, as a goaltender, the NCAA is the best path forward. I have been inspired by North Eastern goalie Devon Levi, who I was able to watch play in Carleton Place a few years back. He has set records and has become a role model for me. I know that I must prepare for life after hockey and have been interested in kinesiology as a result of working with my personal trainer. If I don't end up playing hockey for a living I want to train people to become better athletes. I have taken the opportunity to volunteer as a coach and trainer at a couple of camps and goalie schools in the area as a result.
My coaches always describe me as hardworking, athletic, and someone who battles. I am a good teammate and will never give up in any circumstance. A good example would be my unique situation this past season. Three games into the year our veteran goalie went down with a year ending injury. As a rookie I had to step in and ended up playing almost every game, on a young team that was not very strong. I learned to battle like I have never battled before as there was no help coming off the bench. My coach said that I kept the team in every game and was very consistent all year. We ended up making the playoffs after winning three knockout games, including one that went into double overtime.
My unique skill set has been described as: athletic, a hard worker, excellent skater, well prepared, consistent, excellent lateral movement, battles, extremely quick, and one who never gives up
I have the ability to make the saves other goalies cannot. My teammates always said that they felt they could make mistakes as they knew I was back there to bail them out.
I have played competitive baseball and became an umpire as. I presently have a part-time job at the grocery store to help pay for my hockey equipment. My goalie development has been at SHIFT in Ottawa with coach Matt Dopud. I have been with Matt for almost 9 years. I also train with Mike Ho in the gym at SHIFT.
I hope to get the opportunity to chat with you in the not too distant future about my goals and dreams.
Thank you
Ty
