I am a Sophomore two sport Varsity athlete who has been the 2023 KY Freshman Lacrosse Player of the Year, the highest scoring Freshman lacrosse player in the country for the 2023 season, and the 2023 MVP of the National Lacrosse Box Tournament (Midget) in San Jose, California this summer. In Varsity football, I was part of the starting receiving core and special teams units and was listed in the Top Fifty receivers in Class 5A in Kentucky this season. While these things are great, they aren’t what makes me who I am. They do, however, reflect my work ethic and my determination to compete and to do so at high levels with my team no matter what the challenge.
For most of my life, one of my biggest sports challenges was that I was undersized; tiny. small. What I lacked in height, I made up for in speed, agility, and grit. I dodged and scored on guys significantly larger than me; I played lacrosse. I rode defenders for turnovers successfully; I played lacrosse. I assisted my teammates; I played lacrosse. I now think my experiences being undersized afforded me the opportunity to see things differently and to even move differently, possibly even read things differently and see something someone else might not. What I may have seen as an obstacle has actually been something that has helped me observe and approach things differently. And I continue to do so. Though I have gone through a growth spurt, “the little guy who plays with lots of heart” is still on the field. No matter how small or big I am, it’s always all out. It’s always with the team and for the team, together.
As with sports, I have had a successful academic career and look forward to having many more learning opportunities in high school and experiences in and out of school that will help me determine what I want to study in college. For now, I am excited to focus on AP Seminar and AP World History, among my other classes, so that I can prepare for my next step.
I have had the great experience of both of the schools I have attended being wonderful experiences for me in the classroom and out. I am looking for the same in my next school. I hope that my next step is just as memorable as the first two experiences have been and that I will have the honor of representing my university as a scholar athlete on the lacrosse team.
Respectfully,
Logan Huelsman
