Personal Statement
My name is Lucian, I live and attend school in Cambridge (UK), and I row in the junior 1st boat at the Cambridge 99 Rowing club.
I have been rowing for over three years and competing outside of the local club level for the past year. At the end of the last season, I made the 2x A-final at National Schools and the 2x B-final at the British Rowing Championship (finishing 8th overall) with my sculling partner. I also participated in a composite 4- (senior + junior men) at the Henley Qualifiers.
During my time rowing, I have experienced both setbacks and successes, which have motivated me to improve my skills, technique, and overall performance. Rowing not only drives me to excel in sports but also has a significant positive influence on other areas of my life like academia, where it drives me to work harder to maintain my good grades. Rowing is a great counterbalance to my studies, and I firmly believe that success in both goes hand in hand. Having completed my UK GCSE studies at the Cambridge Academy of Science and Technology and having secured a place at Hills Road College for my A-levels (in Maths, Chemistry and Biology), I have a keen interest in studying STEM subjects in College/University, in particular in the fields of biochemical and biomedical engineering, as well as in neuroscience.
Rowing has taught me the importance of teamwork and resilience, fostering effective communication and support among teammates. Joining your crew would enable me to contribute my strong work ethic, passion, and drive to excel, and I am incredibly excited at the opportunity to grow within a community of such driven athletes. For my personal goals this season, I aim to compete in the Great British Under-19 trials, and I will also row in my club's 1st junior 4x, where we hope to place well at the Schools Head of the River and qualify for Henley.
Since I started rowing three years ago, my dream has been to row in a collegiate eight and achieve an international rowing career, not only for myself but also to help and inspire my peers. I genuinely believe I will make a great addition to your crew, and I am grateful for your consideration and the prospect of discussing my candidacy with you further.
