Personal Statement
I began rowing in late 2016 at the age of 13. My first season consisted of training with out competing as my club was so small I had no one to row with as in New Zealand you cant row Novice single sculls. The following season (2017-2018) I convinced a group of my friends to join and we rowed small boats e.g doubles and singles, we managed to secure a 4th in the novice double at Nationals. Later on in the season we placed 1st in the NISS u15 double with a time of 7:06, and went on to place 4th and Maadi cup. We were proud of our accomplishments as we were a club of 4 boy rowers, with limited resources. In the 2018-2019 season I wanted to get more out of my rowing so I moved to Hamilton Boys High School and since then competed and had relative success.
I think my point of difference between me and other athletes is that I get fully invested into rowing and dedicate myself to the sport. As a member of my schools hostel I have to train alone through out the summer break which for most people might be detrimental but I enjoy the challenge of doing the work behind the scenes, and knowing all the extra work I do gives me the edge over not only other crews but helps make me the best rower I can be. I think its important to embrace the pain and hard work, because if you don't then how are you meant to in the final race of the season. The quote that I tell myself when Im hurting is "when the going gets tough, the tough get going".
I wish to be an travel over seas to complete my university studies and as-well as it being because I feel it is a great choice for my rowing, it is also because of my academic and life goals. One day I wish to screen write and be involved with productions, and there is no better country to do so then America or Great Britain.
