Personal Statement
For several years I have trained and competed in shot put, discus and javelin events and I have
achieved significant successes. On three occasions, I was invited to participate in UK national
championships where I was awarded medals for 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th place. In order to improve my
strength and conditioning for my athletics events, I committed to a rowing training regime two
years ago.
This decision proved momentous for me as I discovered a sport which really challenges me and
which allows me to compete as one of a team as well as individually. Rowing in quads, doubles
and single sculls, has required me to work effectively with different teams in different roles and to
interact with individuals at different skill levels, from beginners to veterans
I have competed for the Ardingly Rowing Club in the Under 18 Quad event at both Dorney Lake
and Kingston Head. I also enjoy the challenge of rowing on the ergometer and I have competed at international level coming 5th for the 500m as well at u17 level, and nationally at the Under 16 level for both 500m and 5 minute for both of which I achieved a bronze
medal. I also competed for the schools Under 18 relay completion, for which we came 4th and in
which I achieved the farthest distance. I have personal bests at 2k of 6mins 09s, 500m of 1min 24.
I have been invited to try out for the England U16 rowing team in March this year and am
competing for the UK in the World Championship Indoor rowing on February the 25th.
My school, Ardingly College, has recognised my achievements in rowing by awarding me a rowing
scholarship, the first time this has been awarded in my school’s history.
I have also been raising money for a local charity Kangeroos, which is aimed at bringing fun to the
lives of people with learning disabilities and recently I raised £500 for this charity by running over
300km.
