Blake Sheppard - Australia
I have been attending Brisbane Boys' College in Queensland, Australia since 2011. My interests include Amnesty International, Red Sheild Appeal as a Student Leader. In 2018 I participated in the BBC Mentoring Programme helping and guiding younger students. Highlights last year for rowing were a first place at the Brisbane Head of the River, third place State Championships U17, U19 in a BBC quad. My crew went undefeated during the GPS Rowing season, 2017. Last year I was 4th seat for the Brisbane Boys' College First 11 and placed 3rd at the Brisbane Head of River and I was then invited to attend the Queensland Pathways Development Squad for 2019. This year I was 2nd seat in the GPS Open First 8 and our best place at Head of the River was a 2nd for 2km/5.52mins and I am currently rowing for Toowong Rowing Club in the High-Performance Squad under 19.
I understand the coaches reading this will receive thousands of applications and mine is just another. However, what makes me any different from all the rest of the applicants you will receive?
My mum suffered from Systemic Scleroderma and in 2013 was accepted to take part in a lifesaving medical trial at North West Memorial Hospital, Chicago. I only tell you this because having a parent who has been very unwell I have learnt how to be supportive and reliable, calm, and appreciate the gifts God has given us big or small. I will listen to my coach, work hard with my studies, enjoy training, row with passion and respect my team members.
However, most of all, I will appreciate the amazing opportunity to row and study for your university or college.
