Personal Statement

Since I first committed to Holy Ghost Prep for high school, I was recommended rowing by my parents and the school. It was an opportunity to immediately show off my athletic gifts at the varsity level. I went through the freshman team honing my skills and at the start of sophomore year, I became a high school varsity athlete. That goal seemed unachievable in middle school as HGP is such a competitive athletic school. But I found a spot where I could succeed and did just that. I've always enjoyed sports where I am part of a team compared to something solo. Rowing holds to that, as everyone on the boat needs to do their own part whereas a basketball team can win with just one Superstar. That sense of connection between a rower and their teammates is very rare to find in any other sport.

I've been a good academic student since I started caring about my grades back in middle school. I got into Ghost on a scholarship and have held my cumulative to around a 3.9 to this point. By the time I go off to college, I hope that's closer to a 4.1. I am easily the best Spanish speaker in my mostly senior class. I also enjoy my AP Governmen course. While physics and math are not my subjects, I'm diligently working to get better at them every waking day. As of writing this at the start of my junior year, I plan to take several AP’s and honors next year to finish off my high school career right. My GPA goal for next year is going to be a 4.3 or higher. I’ve only taken 3 college prep classes compared to 6 honors and 1 AP class throughout my first 2 years. This year I am taking 1 AP, 3 honors, and 2 college prep courses.

In addition to athletics and academics, I am also involved in extracurriculars. My main extracurricular is being the Co-Voice of the Firebirds for the Holy Ghost Broadcasting Department with my best friend. The primary sport I broadcast is basketball as the rest of my after-school time is spent rowing. In college, I plan to try to broadcast baseball/football/basketball for whatever school I choose to attend. I also wish to pursue broadcasting and communications as a career. Outside of broadcasting, I also recently joined the health and fitness club to benefit myself in the coming years.

I also take part in many fundraisers, all which raise money for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). I take part in Extra Life, ran by the gaming club. Extra Life is an all-night gaming event where donations pour in prior to and during the event. During freshman year, I had the most total donations of any person in the event. Another way I raise money for CHOP is via the Philly Spin-In. A cycle event where we bike for hours to raise money for the cardiac center. My brother was born with a heart defect so this event really hits home every time I do it.

Regarding myself, I see myself as someone who’s willing to work to get to the final goal. While the path might be rough, I try to find innovative ways to work the situation in my favor. I try my best to be a leader and lead my friends and peers in the right direction. I’m kind, and always think of others before myself. I believe that regardless of what school I end up going to, I will have an extremely positive impact and will leave my mark.
