Personal Statement

My name is Simon Maly. I am a senior at Bishop Ireton High School and a Eagle Scout with Scouts BSA Troop 996 in Alexandria, VA. My collegiate goal is to row competitively student-athlete while majoring in a STEM field, such as physics. I understand that these are lofty goals and that to achieve them I will need to be a diligent student-athlete and a leader. Through Scouting and Crew, I have grown as a teammate by learning skills, develop leadership abilities, and mentoring younger scouts and rowers that will directly assist me with accomplishing my future goals.

Some of the leadership skills I have learned come directly from serving in many Scouting leadership positions. While I was an Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, COVID forced our Troop -along with everything else- into lockdown in 2020. When the current SPL moved away during this time, it left the responsibility of running the Troop to me, which taught me to always be prepared and ready to assume any leadership role. When I was later elected as the SPL, I had the responsibility of restarting in-person Troop activities in a safe manner. Another important lesson I learned as a patrol leader was how to manage a small group, represent them at meetings, and advocate for them when needed.

I have applied these abilities to help my crew team progressively build our abilities of my boat and the larger team. What separates me from other rowers is my determination to improve and achieve my goals in both my athletics and academics. As a result, my 4+ boat in 2023 was invited to SRAA Championships, and went further in WMIRA Championship and Stotesbury Cup standings than we did in my first year on the team (2021-2022).

I look forward to learning more about college rowing opportunities and helping to make a team better.
