Throughout my life I have been playing sports but I had never really found a sport I belonged to until I started rowing. From the get go with rowing I knew I was in the right spot. Rowing wasn't like football or basketball, I had never been so committed to a sport and a team as I did in my first year of varsity rowing, we had a culture unmatched by any athletics program I've ever seen or heard of. We became more than a team or a family, we were a crew. I felt whenever I got in that boat; the boys in front and behind me had my back, and they wanted me to win just as badly as they wanted to win. This year taught me that there is no better place for a young man to find himself than on a crew.
While athletically I am a proven winner and can definitely make a boat go fast, I posses the ability to lead a crew and grow a culture between the rowers. After one of our bigger wins; my coach told me I was the leader on that boat, and that I brought them together; made them eat, sleep, and breathe together, and that my contribution to that culture is one of the reasons we rowed so well together. As a college rower I am confident my leadership would be just as powerful. While I have two years left to row with my high school crew, I cannot help but look forward and try to find my place in a college crew. Wherever I go to college, I believe there would be no better place for me than on it's crew.
