For the last ten years, soccer has been a major part of my life, whether playing in rec leagues as a kid or playing for my school and club teams. I was also playing basketball at a very high level and there were often scheduling conflicts between the two sports. It seemed as if something had to give. As I reflect on the last few years, ironically enough, it seems as if some of the challenges in soccer actually prompted me to direct more of my focus towards this sport.
My club teams have always performed well and my current team, Brookhaven FC 00 Gold, is no different. My high school team, however, has consistently struggled - lacking talent and depth in key positions. Instead of letting this situation get me down, I chose to use it as a motivator. I have increased my level of commitment, which in turn has increased both my level of play and my love for the game. As a captain, I have also tried to motivate my teammates to keep their heads up during the tough times and work even harder on and off the pitch to improve. Playing several different positions on my high school team in order to plug holes and compensate for the deficit has made me a much more versatile player. I feel that my work ethic, leadership, and commitment will help me to immediately become an asset to any program and I look forward to the opportunity.
