Personal Statement
My name is Chiel Van den Berg, and I'm 20 years old. Becoming a professional soccer player has always been my dream, and I know I have the skills to make it happen. Coaches and people around me have always said the same. I'm driven, disciplined, and thrive in team environments. From a young age, I've been athletic and naturally talented at soccer, spending countless hours playing in the streets of Utrecht, Netherlands.
When I was younger, clubs often asked me to join, but my parents chose martial arts instead. I spent two years in Thai boxing and nine years in wrestling, which taught me a lot about discipline and toughness. Additionally, I pursued a school program at VeVa (Safety and Defense Netherlands) to become a Non-Commissioned Officer in the military, although I didn't complete it. Despite not finishing, this experience strengthened my discipline and resilience even further.
At 14, I finally convinced my parents to let me focus on soccer. I played at a high level in the Netherlands, specifically in the Third Division, which is similar to Division 1 in the United States, for VV Sterrenwijk. Unfortunately, the team disbanded because my teammates lost interest in soccer.
I am interested in playing soccer in the United States because I believe it offers better opportunities for me at this stage in my career. At 20, it's hard to get noticed by professional teams in Europe, especially in the Netherlands, where they prefer younger players. I've researched and found that the United States has more opportunities, and I'm excited to take advantage of them.
Throughout my journey, coaches and mentors have seen my potential to become a professional soccer player. Now, I need your support to continue this journey.
