Personal Statement
Growing up in a family full of soccer fans, from my grandfathers, to my father, all of whom played soccer growing up. This sport extends beyond the field, it brings families together, builds communities and unites nations.
As I attended matches with my family, it was my uncle's love of the sport that sparked my own adoration and excitement of the game. Going to the games with him allowed me to feel the excitement at the stadiums: the group of fans, the vibrant colors of their shirts, the gigantic flags waving in circles and the unified cheer of people around me. The wins and losses at the end of each game, and perhaps even hearing my name one day being cheered from the stands. I realized that soccer is a powerful sport that can bring strangers together and I wanted to be a part of that. I wanted to be a soccer player.
My favorite coach once told me "Sometimes the challenge of a team isn't always about talent, skill or ball possession, but rather trying to envision the strategy of the game. The challenge is being able to manage and predict the game around you”. Therefore, whenever I’ve stepped onto a field I’ve remembered those words and tried to envision the strategy that I would need to execute, taking in my surroundings, analyzing my opponents and synergizing with my team.
With this in mind, playing under pressure enabled me to improve my reaction, coordination and decision making skills.
Being soccer a very popular sport and a competitive market, my parents supported my passion to become a soccer player but always told me that I should have a plan B, in case soccer wasn’t the hoped path for me. I therefore explored other options and it led to my growing interest towards business management in High school. Consequently, I was able to link my experience in soccer with business management concepts, such as leadership, being a team player, and being able to analyze a football game, just like in business when analyzing a market for new opportunities. An example of this is analyzing where every player is positioned in the pitch and being able to plan where he will move according to his ability, and ultimately formulate a strategy that will help a team achieve a positive result, i.e. to win the game.
I still dream and plan to keep playing soccer, even if it’s for my future University. However, I realize that if my dream doesn’t come true, working as a businessman would allow me to develop the skills that I have learnt on the soccer pitch.
As a player I’m always determined to win, create opportunities for my team to reach their goals and improve as a group. In soccer, I learned that sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. In business, the same can be applied; we analyze environmental factors, research opportunities in the market, and come up with strategies for revenue and profit goals, at the end to stand out successfully from competitors.
The Business Management Program offered at your Institute will develop my skills as a team leader and cultivate critical thinking and communication skills necessary to perform the tasks ahead. A successful entrepreneur, in my opinion, needs to be confident, open minded, creative, passionate and a risk taker.
Continuing my studies in Business Management and the prospect of playing varsity soccer is my dream come true. It is not an easy path, but I'm a diligent, hard working student and I believe that this is my pathway. There is still a lot to learn in this life, and I look forward to a future in Business Management.
