Exploring the Boundaries
My desire to further my understanding and insight into wide ranging academic theorems aside, an acute other interest of mine manifests itself in sporting form. Soccer. The world’s most popular sport, which transcends cultures, languages and ethnicities, all stems primarily from one single part of the human body. The agility, speed, control and power of the foot, all highly refined in their own specific way, are the essential underlying facets of any valuable asset on a roaster. Yet the makings of a tenacious and successful footballer go beyond simply physical skill. Half a football game is played on the field, and the other half in the mind. This demands a pro-active vision of the game, an extraordinary sense of timing and a strong capacity to bond meaningfully with his teammates.
Such considerations and requirements have all influenced my development within the sport, having been playing since the age of five. I won more games, cups and championships than I can actually recall. Admittedly, all Surrey county locals. But it’s the lessons I have learnt, as opposed to the statistics I have achieved, that matter most to me. 6 am wake ups and booked up weekends have characterised my high school experience, all for the sake of 90 minutes on a soccer field. Constantly wanting to enhance my sporting ability and knowing outcome requires action, I even presented myself at a professional soccer trail in year 10. Nervous and unsure, I superseded the psychological boundaries and was scouted by Farnborough FC, ultimately being offered a contract with the club. After careful consideration, I obviously declined the offer. I gained, however, something which will outlast any contract: an appreciation for a relentless dedication to a craft, sometimes without immediate reward.
The reaching of a supposed limit, and then pushing it further, is in my opinion one of my most pronounced characteristics. The reaching of a supposed limit, and then pushing it further, is what you demand as a competitive coach. I cannot wait to explore the next boundaries - and with the privilege of being given the chance to show you my real potential - eventually join your competitive roaster for the Fall of 2020.
