Personal Statement

My most vivid childhood memory is watching a dishevelled female teenager search for food in a dumpster on the streets of Lagos, Nigeria. The pain in her eyes spoke to me louder than words can ever hope to. I am Ohen Ohiwerei, an 18 year old Nigerian who believes in hard work, gallantry, honesty, empathy and equity amongst many things.

My belief in equity manifests firstly in the number of friends I have lost by standing up for fellow students who were being bullied and secondly in my fervent participation in charitable activities which include frequent visits, assistance and donations to the Heart of Gold charity foundation amongst other orphanages and places of the poor. My exhibition of gallantry and honesty translated to years of successful service as Captain of the Whitesands School football team with which I won trophies including the Puma School for Speed, Pacesetters soccer championship, Elite soccer competition and Lebanese School Tournaments as well as currently contesting  in the GTB Heritage Cup(which schools all over participated in) at semi-finals. These qualities enabled me to hone my leadership experience  and apply effective conflict resolution measures even on my angriest days(which we all have). Irrefutable evidence of these can be found in the clean Suspensions and Sanctions record that I was able to maintain throughout secondary school years.

Furthermore, proof of my belief in hard work shows in my academic journey which has been filled with determination to excel despite challenges. A summary of that is my improvement from mediocre result sheets to result sheets with an average above 70%. This becomes an incredible feat when put up against my past performance as such, has given the confidence that hardwork pays. I particularly enjoy fighting for sport victories and motivating my teammates to do the same while enjoying themselves. My desire to selflessly help my teammates improve is founded on the words of William Leonard Roberts II that say "A man must measure his success by how well he is able to help others succeed".

I began playing football when I was 9. Playing then, as the youngest amongst family and friends built character and instilled traits that made me the vicious and fearless defender that I am today. Speed, strength and confidence are some of the quintessential qualities that enable my performances on the field to symbolize defensive excellence, grit and solidity. My hunger for personal improvement have led me to stay back after training hours for intense drills which helped me develop the agility in my interceptions and the tenacity with which I bravely get into tackles. An attribute I would like to work on, however, is my long range passing.

In my time at Whitesands School, my speed and prowess on the athletic track was rewarded with over 30 medals at inter-state, inter-house and  inter-school competitions. I was also accepted into the FC Barcelona Escola Academy in Lagos out of millions of Nigerians that participated in the trials. Also, I won the award of Sportsman of the Year at Whitesands School for four consecutive years(2012-2017) against competition from over 100 students in my grade. At the Pacesetters competition, the Whitesands School football team I led conceded only 1 goal in 7 games and I am proud to have fought for that at the heart of the defence. Lastly, I was an integral member of both the Photography, Dance and Handball clubs.

Football has always been a way through which I could channel my energy positively. Even as a child, I loved seeing my family members express their emotions when watching the beautiful game. All my life, I've wanted to be just like Carles Puyol. His high level of discipline and great success regarding silverware unanimously made him my biggest idol but in all honesty my collegiate and life ambitions are bigger than trophies, Puyol and even football. I want to change the world, beginning with environment o fond myself. Sports gives me the opportunity to explore and express myself. During my stay in your institution, I hope to equip myself with skills that will enable me to take on the world of sports at any level. Someday, I hope to lead Nigeria to international glory just like Jay Jay Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo and many before me.

I was born to a financially average family and where I come from, it is widely believed that people of my social class can not survive the rigours of the worlds of entertainment and sports. This has driven me to work even harder at my goals.I am sure that my time at your institution will greatly improve my chances of success in my quest for international stardom, a better Nigeria and a fairer world. I look forward to positive feedback and thank you very much for your consideration.
