Personal Statement
Good day Coaches! My name is Anotidaishe Lionel Matarutse I am currently on an extended gap year (due to the pandemic). I graduated from high school in November of 2019 with a final GPA of 3.84 out of 5 and a pass in Cambridge A level and AS level. I am impassioned with the idea of pursuing soccer competitively whilst attending an academically selective University or College. I strongly believe that the USA is the place for me. It will allow me to pursue my ambitions to play professional soccer, whilst receiving the world's best tertiary education. I hope to start my professional career in the US because it is full of opportunities both academically and athletically, especially for International students as it is not only the world’s economic superpower but the world's most electric sporting hub.
Currently, I stand at 6’4 (1.93m) weighing 185 pounds (84kg). I am a versatile player who can play in several positions. My strongest position being a Center Attacking Forward. My playstyle resembles that of Erling Haaland, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Thierry Henry. Throughout my high-school and social soccer career, I have played the following positions comfortably: Right Winger, Left Winger, Center Attacking Midfielder, and Right Back. I am certain that with my skill and size Coaches will be able to fulfill my full potential. Willingly enough, I am ready to adapt and adjust to fit in different soccer coaching tactics and play styles.
For High School, I attended St. Johns College, a top academic and sporting school in Zimbabwe. Soccer was still an up-and-coming sport in the school but that did not affect my ambition to play. I represented the school in several tournaments, in particular, I took part in the CHSIZ (Conference Head of Independent Schools Zimbabwe) U16 Football (Soccer) Tournament and I was selected to represent CHISZ in Germany in 2016. Moving on to 2017, as a High-school Junior I was selected into the Varsity Team (U20). In my first season representing the school at this level, I finished the season with 8 goals and 2 assists in 11 games (5 coming off the bench). Although game time was minimal I believe I increased my potential through this.
What I believe to be my most impressive and successful year as a high-school student came in my final year of school in 2019. Playing in a new position (Attacking Midfielder) I was able to carry my team to an unbeaten run in the Northern Region CHISZ league, Quarter Finals of the prestigious Hammer & Tongues National Tournament, winners of the CHSIZ Schools Tournament, and Finally National CHSIZ champions. I won the most valuable player (MVP) in the CHISZ tournament and won the school's MVP award. I was nominated for the CHISZ players’ player of the year. I finished the season with 14 goals and 11 assists in 27 games.
