My eighth grade year I did not make my middle school soccer team. That day I vowed to myself I would never play again because I did not think I was as good as the other kids. Years went by as I sat and let myself waste away but then my sophomore year came. I realized then that I could not let that one event dictate my future so I showed up to tryouts and made our jv team. During that season I got to meet many cool people and grow as a player and at the end of the year I won the most improved award for our jv team. Although that was cool I still felt like their was a hole I needed to fill, I wanted more. That summer I worked on my game and by the time the next season started I was at the top of my game. I worked all summer and it payed off because I made the varsity team. I realized shortly after though it was not what I thought it would be. The varsity team was very fast paced and the players did not seem to like me because I was new and I was not as big as everyone else, I felt like an outsider. Games went by where i say by myself on the bench. This made me very sad and I wanted to quit really bad, but something kept me from quitting. I remember before my grandpa died he used to tell me that winners aren’t defined by how many times you win, winners are people that can take what life throws at them and can keep pushing. I kept working and I finally got my chance at our very first state soccer game our team had ever played in. Coach called my name for the starting lineup, and as the national anthem played and I saw all the fans in the crowd I realized that it was more than me loving the sport I had now become one with the sport. As the game started I found myself on the other side of a cross and finished it to score the first state goal in our schools history. I was quickly embraced by my team and it felt amazing. Then he game turned upside down. The opposing team then scored four unanswered goals on us to send us home from our first state game in our school’s with a four to one loss. That game taught me no one is born amazing at something it’s all about hard work and determination. I learned that I deserved the chance to be a high class player just as much as anyone else. In conclusion I am a going to graduate this year and I hope to continue my career after I leave high school. I am prepared to give everything I have in me for my team no matter what team it is.
