Personal Statement

My name is Joshua Guzman, age 15.  This school year (2016-2017) I am starting my Junior year at Warren High School in Downey, California. I have been swimming and competing for 9 years, since age 7.  Swimming for me is a passion and I practice and compete because I enjoy swimming.  I am 5’ 6” and currently weight 171 lbs.  I am responsible, creative, dependable, organized, athletic and social.

 Accomplishments

  1. Some personal accomplishments include making it to the qualifiers for the Junior Olympics Max Long Course Championship for the 500 freestyle.  I was recognized by the Lynwood City Council for this accomplishment and highlighted in the city newspaper, Lynwood N’ Perspective. Another accomplishment is making it to CIF Spring 2016 as a member of a relay and coming in as a second alternate for the 500 free. I was given 1st place trophy for earning the highest points in the South Central League. I received a gold medal for the San Gabriel Valley League for the 400 freestyle relays.  I received two silver medals in the Orange County Jaguar for 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.  I also received 3 bronze medals for 100 back, 100 freestyle, and 500 freestyle in the Orange County Jaguar League. In more recent times I attended the division 4 CIF Championships and was able to place third at CIF. I was also awarded the Murdoch Frasier award, which is an award granted to those who are head strong and are examples of how a student athlete should and is more than willing to act inside and outside the classroom as well as the pool.

Educational Goals / Career Goals

My aspiration after high school is to attend a four-year university and major in aerospace science and engineering.  My career goal is to be a Satellite Designer Engineer.  I am good with designing objects with my creativity. I feel that designing things help me in being creative and express my ideas with my designs.  I dream of designing a satellite that will help explore other planets, have better communication, and have a bigger impact on society by discovering new livable planets.  I don’t only want to attend a university, but I want a university where I can also swim.  My swim goal is to make it to Nationals and represent my school.  I prefer a smaller school, but I am open to attending a big school as well.  Location is not an issue as I am willing to live away from my family.

What to expect from me?

What schools can except from me is a trainable athlete who can meet and exceed expectations. I am the first to get into the water and the last to come out, and I am always looking for a way to improve my swimming in anyway possible. During my sophomore year I was team caption for my schools water polo team and lead them to a victory for several games. I am dedicated and hardworking.  I will push myself because my goal is to make it to Nationals and possibly to the Olympics for swimming.
