Swimming has influenced how I’ve developed and become who I am today. I learned how to swim when I was 4 and after that day I would spend every weekend in my backyard pool. My parents decided to put me on a recreational swim team for the summer. I enjoyed it so I would always go back every summer. Then one year I won the High Point award for the Mid Valley Swim League 2013 Championship. I was 12 at the time. This achievement prompted me to join a year round swim team and work harder to become faster.
During recreational swim winning came easily. However in my first competitive meet, I quickly learned that I would have to take swimming more seriously if I wanted to achieve the goals I have set for myself. Competitive swimming has taught me many lessons but one that I think is the most important is the realization that reaching a goal is more than a two step process. In order to reach any goal, whether it be swimming or academically, you have to take multiple steps, each one more demanding than the one before.
Overall, swimming has become a part of who I am. Being on a swim team alone has taught me to encourage others and to push each other to become the best we can be. I know that swimming has shaped my character and will influence many aspects of my life.
