Personal Statement

I have been swimming competitively for 11 years now and it has always been a huge part of my life. Swimming helps me to focus, it is a break for my mind in between school and homework, and allows me to refocus my efforts after a good workout. I simply enjoy being in the water. This summer, I have spent eight hours every weekday in the pool, training hard for upcoming competitions, and kindling this burning passion in young ones by teaching swim lessons. For the future, I strive to be a strong college athlete that is able to contribute to a team and garner points to win conferences. At the same time, I desire to maintain a strong focus on academics as they will help to shape my future. From a young age, I have understood and appreciated the value of a strong education, a mindset that my parents helped to instill within me. I have come to love to learn and want to continue this passion through college, and take the skills I have acquired into future job opportunities.

Personal trainers Michael Vaandering and Dr. John Mullen are working with me on developing my core in addition to a nutrition plan and mental mindset with racing strategies.   • During afternoon practices, my current coach, John Bitter, sticks to a particular format every day. We start off the practice with a warm up, then move on to stroke work / sprints. This is followed by a kick set which is usually around 1,000 yards. Then, we move on to the main set. Currently, my main focus in practices is distance, so we do many high yardage sets that focus on training for the distance freestyle events. On occasion, we will also do I.M. and stroke sets as main sets. During these stroke sets, I tend to focus on backstroke. Finally, we finish off the practice with a pull set, some sprints and finally a warm-down. The entire practice averages 7,000 yards. In the mornings, we tend to do more stroke work and long pulling and kicking sets, as well as some shorter sprint and pace sets. M, T, TH, F 6:00 – 8:00 AM M- F 5:00 – 7:00 PM Saturday 6:00- 8:00 AM
