Personal Statement
- My name is Ryan Williams and I’m finishing up my Junior Year at Truckee High School (near Lake Tahoe – I actually live just a few blocks from the lake in Tahoe City). I’ve been swimming since I was 5 years old (originally on summer rec leagues when we were living in Danville, CA and Austin, TX and then eventually on club. I swam for a bit on the Junior Longhorn Aquatics Team while in Austin but have mostly been swimming for Truckee-Tahoe Swim Team (since we moved back to CA in 2013).
- I played other sports up until high school (baseball, lacrosse and basketball) but have pretty much focused on swimming since entering high school.
- I also enjoy snow skiing, wake surfing, skateboarding & surfing. I feel like I’m a pretty well rounded swimmer in that I don’t really have a bad stroke. In a team environment, I think that makes me pretty valuable both as an individual contributor and also on relays.
- Up until this past year or so (before I grew a lot), I’ve always had to grind in order to find success in the pool (small improvements / chipping away here and there, but definitely a struggle to keep up with the bigger kids who grew earlier). Today, I’m almost 6 ft, 3 in and I weigh about 165 pounds. The extra size has definitely helped and I feel like I still have a lot of growth ahead. In addition to swim practice, I’ve been working out in the weight room 4 – 5 days per week and I feel like that’s helping build a lot of additional strength that translates into speed in the pool. I’m hoping that I can continue growing within swimming and eventually move forward into an awesome college experience.
