Swimming has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Despite having dyslexia, being a swimmer has taught me that nothing can define who I am except for myself. I have the strength to work to meet a goal in sports and academics. As the team captain of my high school team my freshman year, I learned that I can motivate and influence others to reach their goals.
My success in swimming required dedication to the sport. When I started, there was no age-group swim club in my small, rural town. The neighboring county had a swim club without a pool. This meant a 40-45 minute drive to stay active and compete. Despite this obstacle, I excelled and have medaled in age group divisionals, qualified for state events, broken high school conference records in the 100 fly, 200 IM, and 500 free, the high school team 100 fly record and 50 free recrod and the age group team 400 IM record. I also was the conference MVP as a freshman, sophomore and Junior. As a Junior, I broke the 50 free record at the Irish Aquatics Tim Welch age group invitational. I was chosen to win an outstanding athlete award from the local radio station in 2017 and 2018.
Outside of swimming, I golf in my off season which gives me a break to prepare mentally for the next swim season. I enjoy working with special needs children and adults. I volunteer as a special needs camp counselor every summer. Working with the participants is truly rewarding. In addition, I volunteer to teach swim lessons for my club and my high school team. I am looking forward to a career in nursing.
