Personal Statement
Swimming is not “my sport”. It defines me. For as long as I can remember, I was known as "the kid who swims". The first question anyone asked me was how my swimming was going. I was defined by my swimming.
I didn't just want to be the fastest swimmer in my school and captain of my club team. So what did swimming mean to me and what did I finally want? After much thought, I realized swimming was actually one of the key pieces to what I wanted to do. Meanwhile, I had also developed a passion for automobiles; in a crazy way I felt that fast cars motivate me to swim faster! When I see a sports car, I gaze at it as if it were a piece of art. I try reasoning why every curve in a car’s bodywork is placed where it is.
The two obsessions, swimming and cars thus merged. Before every meet, when we start taper workouts. I treat myself like engineers pamper an F1 race car. I keep my body temperature at optimum levels; I load on the right nutrients and foods; I do breathing exercises and special stretching. It’s important to me that I give my best.
My interest in motion and speed has propelled me to study it. I took IB Physics Higher Level to understand my interest in cars. I attempt to design cars, doodling and sketching as relaxation. IB Physics at the higher level allows me to understand and perform experiments involving mechanics, kinematics, fluid dynamics, thermal dynamics etc which are all used in the conceptualization of a motor vehicle. I wrote my Extended essay (a 4000 word document involving an in-depth research on – “optimization of the electric motor for speed and efficiency”. I also took IB Chemistry Higher Level to supplement the lessons I learned in IB Physics HL. In addition, I am studying Economics Higher Level to give myself the complete educational package.
From competitive swimming to the automobile industry, I’m willing to give it my all. I believe my swimming is what will continue to define me and I hope that my next school will push me to swim better and thus realize my potential in all areas .
