Personal Statement
Starting swimming only a few years ago has influenced me as a person and as an athlete, and was the best decision I have ever made. I have never been one of the top swimmers as a lot of the competitors started long before I did. This has influenced me to strive for excellence, but not to be deterred from swimming despite never winning. I think this is really important as it’s a value that makes me who I am. It has taught me to never give up and to not give up if I do not win, because if I try hard enough, slowly but surely, I will get closer to the top. This has been a big role in my improvement as a swimmer. 2/3 years ago when I began, never would I have thought that I would be pursuing a subject I enjoy while doing a sport which is now close to my heart. At first my motivation to start swimming was to challenge myself mentally and physically as I had gone through life always taking the easy route. As time went I would learn to love the sport and the people which came along with the sport. Without swimming, I would still be the kind of person who would go through life putting in minimal effort into the things I do and never challenging myself by taking the easy path in life.
A characteristic which I think makes me unique, is my strong will to collaborate and my will to create inclusion with everyone around me. My flexibility allows me to pursue my goals and needs while still encouraging and helping others to achieve their needs and goals as well. I think this makes me unique because I am willing to take the extra mile to help others achieve their goals while still being able to focus on my needs. This unique characteristic which has contributed to coaches or teachers choosing me in leadership roles such as captain, vice-captain and vice-president throughout my school years.
