Personal Statement
I started out as a back of the pack triathlete in 2017 (the swim was my weakness) but slowly improved, winning the national ranking in the 16-17 category in 2020 and getting a pro license for 2021 when I raced domestically as well as internationally representing Mexico, completing a very successful season. In November of 2021 I got the opportunity to race in my first swim meet ever, the state swimming championships after my offseason break and surprised myself with pretty solid results and a qualifying time for pro national swimming championships. After a lot of reflection and analysis on the current state of the sport of draft legal triathlon and my own strengths and weaknesses I decided to switch sports and focus on swimming (pool and open water) since I feel I have more potential due to my physical characteristics and good results with extremely low volume and little time doing it.
Over the years I have matured a lot as an athlete due to my exposure to different training philosophies and methods and have developed a strong connection between my mind and my body that have allowed me to keep improving at rates that are not normal, especially for swimmers in my age range. I am interested in swimming in college and have decided that even though I graduate college this year (2022) I will be taking a gap year to focus on swimming, probably in the USA in order to become a stronger prospect for potential teams.
I I am aware that my path is not the normal one and this has never really been done before by anyone, but I believe in my possibilities. I am completely sure that I have a huge room for improvement in many aspects in relation to swimming (strength, technical aspects, experience, training volume, training intensity, etc.) I have a body that is well suited for swimming (6'3 height and 6'5 wingspan) and have historically had a low swim volume (My first week over 30,000 meters was in December 2021 and my first week over 40,000m was march 2022) So I trust that through hard work I can continue lowering my times significantly and keep exploring my potential.
