Personal Statement
My name is Delbert Ipilinga, and I am an International Baccalaureate student with an estimated GPA of 3.76. I am currently balancing a rigorous academic program, including Higher Level courses in Math, Physics, and Geography, with my commitment to swimming, where my main stroke is breaststroke. My goal is to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science to prepare for a career in government, diplomacy, or working with NGOs, focusing on giving back to my community and creating meaningful change, particularly in Tanzania.
Swimming has been an essential part of my life since second grade, initially as an after-school activity but eventually becoming a professional pursuit. As a member of the Taliss Swim Club and HPT team in Tanzania, I’ve had the honour of competing at high levels, including the World Aquatics Junior Championships in Netanya, Israel, the African championships, and other regional competitions. Training at swimming camps in Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania has pushed me to improve continually, motivating me to reach new heights and refine my breaststroke performance.
Beyond swimming, I am also a dedicated chess player, representing Tanzania on the national chess team. My journey in chess, which began in middle school, has helped me strengthen my strategic thinking, balance, and focus—qualities that I bring to my academics, athletics, and every aspect of my life. I view swimming as an integral part of my identity rather than an extension of my routine, allowing me to balance my goals in and out of the pool effectively.
My experience as captain of several swim teams, including the Tanzanian national team, Taliss Swim Club, and the HPT team, has deepened my leadership skills. In these roles, I have supported teammates through moments of anxiety or nervousness, especially during first-time competitions or high-stakes events. I believe that leadership is about creating a supportive environment, and I value a team atmosphere that feels like family, where the coach is approachable yet motivating.
I am driven by a commitment to making the most of my talents, and I am supported by my parents, coaches, and faith. Not everyone has access to the same opportunities, especially in Tanzania, and I want to make my community proud by maximizing the potential I’ve been blessed with. This drive pushes me through challenges and keeps me striving for growth in every area of my life.
I am excited to join a college program that values resilience, unity, and excellence. I look forward to contributing to the team’s success and continuing my journey in the sport I love while working towards my academic and career aspirations.
Thank you for considering me as a potential recruit—I am eager for the opportunity to be part of a team where I can thrive and contribute with pride.
Sincerely,
Delbert Ipilinga
