Personal Statement
Hi there!
My name is Sergey, I’m a 21 year old swimmer from St. Petersburg, Russia. I have been swimming since I was six years old. I am a very dedicated swimmer as you can see in my results, despite long travel times to and from a suitable training facility and over last four years I was basically training by myself, without a consistent coach or a team for support. Apart from swimming, I also love football and play regularly. I love music and very much enjoy playing the piano. I am also a dedicated student and have the equivalent of a 3.4 GPA in the American system. I was granted a study scholarship to my current university because of my good grades.
Throughout my life, I have always dreamed of going to the USA, but not just to travel through your wonderful country. More important to me is to have the freedom and opportunity to realize my potential and achieve something worthwhile in my life. I don’t think this will happen if I remain in Russia. The combination of a very weak economy together with all the corruption and oppression practically stifles any hope of real success.
I have travelled to some western European countries and have seen that life can be better and believe this to be the case in the USA also. To have a normal government, work opportunities and social life, without the constant worry of dangerous people around you and wondering what negative political changes are coming next.
I am looking forward to pursuing a brighter future in the USA and I am ready to work hard to make the most of any opportunities that come my way.
