Personal Statement
My name is Harrison Hynes, I’m from Perth in Western Australia. 100 Butterfly is my main event and 100 Freestyle is a current focus. I currently swim with the Southside Penrhos Wesley Swimming Club and train under Coach, Nick Watkins.
Attending college in the US will be a life changing opportunity for me however as I will be a long way from home, I am looking for a college with a strong cohesive team together with a great athlete/coach relationship.
My education is very important to me and I hope to find a good academic program in combination with high level competition. I have travelled a lot with various state sporting teams and feel that I have the maturity and personality to self-manage my education and development whilst living internationally.
Calculating my GPA from Australian subjects where there is no allowance made for taking the top-level Maths and high-level sciences has resulted in an estimated GPA of 3.0. I have taken my SAT and scored 1170. Currently I am about five months out from my finals exams which will provide the majority of my final grades for the year.
As a secondary sport I do Pool Rescue for which I have been named in the Australian Junior Squad, and as a 15 year old set an Australian Record of 17.42 seconds for 50 metre swim with fins, involving a full long course lap of underwater work. However swimming has always been my priority. I hope that my good academic record, proven leadership skills, commitment to the sport of swimming and excellence in other extracurricular commitments highlights me as someone who will be able to add value not only to a swim team but to the university as a whole.
