I started swimming when I was 8 years old and my parents always said to me, “You were born to swim.” My dad was a competitive swimmer in high school and college. I knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I began swimming with country club teams during summers when I was younger, and in 2010 I joined my first year-round swim club. During my first year, I qualified for the 2011 Louisiana Long Course State Championships in 50 Back. I was so proud of my time (44.03) and power points (545) at such a young age, but I stopped swimming after one year. In 6th grade, I started swimming for my middle school team, and I was good, but knew I could improve. My freshman year at Jesuit High School I made the varsity swim team, but quickly realized that only training during high school season was not going to be enough.
Soon after, I realized my times were nowhere near the times of my teammates. I continued to work hard in my club and high school team. I started training and swimming in different events to find my niche. All the hard work paid off for the first time during my junior year when I qualified for High School State in the 500 Free. I also contributed to my team’s win of the Division I State Championship in 2017.
Since then, my aspirations have become higher and I am training harder than ever. I need to, and want to, continue my swim career in college because swimming has given me goals and helped me overcome personal obstacles. Historically, I have not been an academically strong student, but with the discipline swimming has taught me, I learned to manage my ADHD and successfully improve my GPA. In the future, I hope to achieve academic and athletic success by taking my swimming career to the college level.
