Swimming has been my greatest passion since I was very young. What I want from my college experience is to combine that passion with a related academic study towards my purpose of making a difference in this world.
I have been a year-round club swimmer since I was six years old as part of USA Swimming here in the US and abroad. I am a competitive swimmer and believe I have what it takes to succeed at the collegiate level both in the pool and in the classroom. I describe myself as someone very coachable, a constant learner of my craft, and someone who puts team first in what many believe is an individual sport. My current goals include making USA Jr National time cuts in 3 strokes, place in the Ohio D1 high school state championship in 21/22, and make All-American honors academically and in the pool. In college swimming, I want to make a scoring impact for my school in conference championships and strive for an NCAA championship qualification as an upper classman.
There are two things that set me apart from most other swimmers. First, I have experience with succeeding through life changing transitions. I started USA Swimming when my family moved to Singapore. Swimming for me became an escape and an outlet for my anxiety of living in a new country, attending a new school, and living in a new culture. I returned to the States 4 years later for what was an even more challenging transition as I felt more mature and experienced than my peers. I know the transition to college academics and swimming is the next great transition in front of me and I feel prepared to tackle it. Second, I come from a culture of high-level team and individual success in swimming. My club team has been a top 10 in the country USA Swimming club team for the last 5 years and it comes through talent development in physical, nutritional, and mental readiness all in the context of TEAM. I have experience in what it takes to train as a small cohesive training group and succeed as individuals and as a team. I train with and receive coaching from swimmers who have already experienced great success and have transitioned to some of the NCAA’s most competitive D1 swimming teams and the USA National team. Culture creates success and every team needs athletes like me with the ability to lead in the water, in the gym, on the road, watching film, in the classroom, while challenging/supporting each other every day.
I am seeking a college to call my new home and family where I will be challenged in the pool and in the classroom. I haven’t decided whether to pursue a pre-physical therapy degree in exercise science/physiology or a different science degree. Both are tied to personal experiences that have shaped my life and will require graduate level studies. Getting into the right graduate program is important in these fields so academic reputation, preparation, and rigor are a must in my undergraduate college selection.
I believe I can be a low risk – high potential student athlete for a college that shares my commitment to academics, team culture, and winning.
