My name is Mateja Mesic. I am a competitive swimmer living in Windsor, Ontario. I started swimming at 10 years of age and since then I have fallen for the sport. I am a very competitive person and enjoy racing and meeting new people every swim meet I go to. What I enjoy most about swimming is being able to see progress in becoming a better version of myself both physically and mentally. I'm currently swimming for Windsor Aquatic Club. I'm very attentive and adaptive towards my technique and am always striving to improve. I've gone through many different coaches that coached on the team and have learned that I adapt well to different styles of coaching. Each coach has taught me something new and pushed me beyond my limits in different ways whether it was pushing past the mental barrier I placed in my head or physically exhausting me.
During the pandemic, I had a lot of time to reflect on myself. I realized that in order for me to be a better swimmer when we returned to training, I needed to not only improve my physical health but also improve my mental health. I worked out every day five days a week and took time throughout the day to sit silently and visualize myself swimming, whether it was racing, doing a pace set in practice, etc. I saw progress in my physical state and when we had gotten back into the pool, I saw progress in my mental state as well. I was more eager to race and to challenge myself. When we came back from the lockdown, I came back with the urge to succeed.
Outside of swimming, I have been playing the piano since I was 7 years old and have completed my Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) grade level 7 practical and theory exam as well as completed my Grade 8 theory exam. I'm currently preparing for my grade 8 practical exam. I'm also in the IB program at my high school.
I have always been very interested in machines and vehicles. I would like to educate myself more in the engineering field post-secondary. Specifically, I'm fascinated by aerospace engineering but I have yet to decide on a major I would like to study in the engineering field.
My goal for club swimming is to continue to qualify and compete on a national level. I would like to one day swim for an ISL team and possibly even an Olympic team. I'm more motivated than ever and will do everything in my control to achieve these goals and aspirations. I continue to improve to my fullest capability and set goals for myself. Something I wish to be involved in in my lifetime is the creation of a new era of society where traveling outside our planet could become normalized.
