Swimming appeals to my natural competitive nature. It also gives me the opportunity to support and encourage my fellow teammates but ultimately I compete against myself.
The beginning of my swim career was a rough start and I almost drowned doing the backstroke; however, I began to enjoy the team and competition. After two years of rec league swimming we were introduced to USA swimming. The first team we considered could not find a local pool. So we looked for another option. We found Mecklenburg Swim Association where I have swam for the past four years. I have consistently improved my times through my years of swimming.
During my freshman year I had a stretch of poor meets and one where I almost seriously injured myself. It was frustrating but instead of giving up I looked for ways to improve and break through the wall I felt that I had hit. I signed up for new events and dedicated myself to push my limits in practice. The final meet of the short course season was a great meet for me where I posted personal bests in everything that I swam.
Swimming has taught me invaluable lessons that easily translated to other areas of life especially academics. Perseverance and goal setting that I practice while swimming helps me in my academic pursuits. I have enjoyed my educational experience in mock trial, debate and economics. I plan to study economics/finance in college and then attend law school to finish out my formal education.
