I didn’t start year-round swim until the age of 11, which put me behind most of my peers who had been training at that level since they were 8 or 9. However, that didn’t stop me from trying my best every single practice. I was even more motivated than anyone else because I wanted to catch up to their level. My hard work paid off when I started qualifying for championship meets, such as the IMX Games and Junior Olympics. In my Sophomore year, I qualified for Junior Nationals in the 400IM (SCY) after dropping 7 seconds off of my personal best at the PVS Senior Championships. Getting that cut has motivated me to push myself to go even faster than before to make harder meets.
Swimming has given me a sense of how a team works - not just at the competitions, but as part of a daily routine with practices and training trips - and balancing my swimming schedule with school work and other commitments has definitely improved my time management skills. I enjoy being in a group setting and particularly love being challenged by other swimmers to improve and swim faster. I’m looking for a college environment where I can challenge myself academically and athletically. I understand the responsibility required to be a member of a high-level team and I’m confident that I will be a good fit.
