My introduction into the world of competitive swimming was through MSC, my Summer League team 10 years ago. Looking back at what I have accomplished throughout my swimming history, one would think I had at least a little natural talent... They would be entirely wrong, I was awful. Yet I fell in love with the sport, I spent more time at the club than at home. I can still remember the most impactful event in my life, from the moment I was born up to that Summer. It was the last dual meet of the season. I was put in the 25-meter breaststroke, a race I hadn't yet completed legally. The race took me almost a minute, but I did it. I jumped straight out of the pool, running straight into my coach, Alice. It was right then that she changed my life by inviting me to try out for OCA, the year-around club swim team that John Walker and Alice had started together in 2008.
It wasn’t until the last two years that I truly started to make breakthroughs in my swimming. I started doing the sprints more often to help my high school team, as we were very strong in the distance events. Although I didn’t make State Sophomore year, it set me up to succeed in the future as I cut huge amounts of time from my 50 and 100 freestyle. Then this past season, I went from not even making the state meet, to getting 4th place in the 100 freestyle and 8th place in the 200 freestyle. This Summer I qualified and competed at Futures, where I made finals in the 100 backstroke. The most exciting part about my recent success is that my coach has told me that I have a lot of untapped potential. This upcoming season, I am putting all of my focus on fixing my technique, actually kicking and doing underwaters during races, as well as adjusting my starts. I can’t imagine what my life would have been like if Alice hadn’t invited me to try out that day.
