My passion for tennis ignited at the age of six in Japan. Growing up in a multi-cultural household with an American father and a Korean mother, my early tennis experiences were deeply influenced by the dedication of Japanese coaches and the vibrant local club scene.
After a less-than-ideal experience in my karate class, I decided to try tennis. The moment I picked up a racquet, I knew I'd found my sport. Daily 90-minute training sessions became my routine, often extending to weekends. I vividly remember riding my bike to the tennis club with my brother in the rain – I was seven years old and he was just five years old at the time.
In 2018, our family relocated to Connecticut. Adjusting to a new country, public school system, and social dynamics as a biracial student presented unique challenges. I tried to find my place, but it took time. Tennis remained a constant source of support and a place where I began to build friendships.
The arrival of COVID-19 disrupted my training, but my parents' unwavering support led me to IMG Academy. This transformative experience immersed me in a diverse community of talented players. I rediscovered my passion for the game and honed my skills under the guidance of experienced coaches, including a Japanese coach who helped me feel a sense of familiarity.
As a freshman, I played #1 Doubles and reached the All-State Quarterfinals. In my sophomore year, I led the team as #1 Singles, achieved All-State honors, and contributed to our conference championship victory.
I am a dedicated teammate who thrives in a collaborative environment. While I may be quiet on the court, I actively cheer on my teammates and celebrate their successes, fostering a positive and supportive team atmosphere. During my freshman year, I noticed our team lacked a visible presence on campus. To address this, I spearheaded a fundraising initiative, selling team yard signs. With my parents' support, we raised $300 for our athletic department, a small but meaningful contribution to our team. This year, I expanded my community involvement by launching "The Tennis Broz," a small business with my younger brother where we string and grip racquets for local players. We also actively participate in KSK, Kids Serving Kids, collecting and donating used racquets to underprivileged children.
I am a highly motivated individual with a relentless work ethic. After each match, I conduct thorough self-analysis, identifying areas for improvement in my technique and strategy. I supplement this with dedicated independent practice, focusing on drills and exercises that address my weaknesses.
My ultimate goal is to compete at the collegiate level and contribute to a successful tennis program. I am particularly interested in exploring opportunities at Division 1, 2, or 3 institutions with strong academic programs. I am confident that my skills, dedication, and positive attitude will make me a valuable asset to any team.
