Personal Statement

Hi, my name is Ethan St.John. I am currently a junior at Crystal Lake Central High School. This year I have played #1 doubles with a freshman on the varsity team and this has been a great challenge for me and my most successful year of high school tennis thus far. I have played a lot more singles than doubles so making the transition to doubles was a challenge I embraced by realizing it would give me an opportunity to improve my net game, which would also help in singles. I also realize that if I get to play in college, it could be as a singles or doubles player. Another challenge has been mentoring a freshman who is in his first year in high school and is the only freshman on varsity. Together, we have experienced great success. Not only has my net game improved, we have also qualified for state placing 3rd in sectionals and have lost only 3 matches all season including conference and sectionals. I played #1 Singles last year on Varsity as a sophomore. I also played #1 Doubles and #2 Doubles during my freshman year on the varsity tennis team. I aim to play tennis throughout high school and college.

I am currently considering several degree options including business, marketing and education.

I have not chosen which college I would like to attend yet, but it has to offer tennis and have a good program for the major I want to study. I have done several film projects as well as experimenting with audio production to try to learn more about how these interest areas may be applied in the area of marketing. As this school year comes to an end, I have taken business classes this year that will help me in narrowing my choices further as I get ready to apply to colleges this summer.

I believe one of my strongest attributes is creating a fun, team focused environment among my teammates. My freshman year I played on the Varsity team which was more of learning experience for me. Last year I've focused on trying to help my teammates improve, especially the lesser experienced ones and also helping my coach with practices and clean up after practice and the team voted me MVP. This year I helped by being the team manager for the girls varsity team where I helped with meets and will helped with practices feeding balls and helping as a hitting partner. This is where I also realized I may enjoy teaching and coaching, which has led to my potential choice as education as a college major.

While my tennis skills are good enough to win matches, I still believe I hold a lot of potential to improve and welcome a coach that is willing to help me improve, so I can play better for him/her. My goal is to be a great team player, that works hard during practice and matches, doing my best at all times to try and get another win for the team!
