Personal Statement
“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle; the other is as though everything is a miracle.” Albert Einstein
From extreme prematurity, weighing less than 2lbs, with 90 days in the Neo Intensive Care Unit to a healthy teenager who exceeded all expectations, I am truly grateful for each opportunity to continue to progress beyond all bounds and to be the best person that I can be in spite of circumstances.
Whilst I was born in Broward County, Florida and despite my early days my parents were convinced that life on the small Caribbean island of Anguilla would be best for my overall development. Though life on the island has its challenges and with my parents who are always working on projects at home, Anguilla has certainly allowed me, from an early age to experience and benefit from outdoor tropical living; dealing annually with preparations and the aftermath of tropical storms, being innovative in construction, carpentry and mechanical projects and simply being close to nature.
My school life thus far has instilled the importance of team work and gratitude in making use of the resources which are available. At primary school, whilst I excelled academically I enjoyed representing my school in Spelling Bee competitions, national quizzes and all sporting events.
Similarly at Secondary school, not only did I participate in all sporting activities I also represented Anguilla regionally in various sporting disciplines, notably: cricket, athletics and, football (I played two CONCACAF Soccer Tournaments at IMG).
Whilst tennis is not played a part of the school program in Anguilla, I developed the love for the sport through my parents in particular my father who regularly plays on a recreational basis. I started playing the game at age seven. I have had the opportunity to attend two summer tennis camps at Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton, Florida and the experience compounded my desire to further pursue the game. Of all the sports which I have played there is a special passion to play the game at college level. My strength, skills (notably my serve and groundstrokes) and overall endurance are great strengths of my tennis game.
In addition to sports, I also play several instruments namely: the piano, the Trombone (with the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School Band and Orchestra) and also the bass guitar.
I have also had the opportunity to accompany my parents to several international sporting events mainly Commonwealth Games in India, London,Scotland and Australia.
These combined experiences have allowed me to have an appreciation for not only the value of sports throughout the world in shaping lives but also the work ethic required to be good. It has certainly impacted my life and my desire to strive for and exert myself to be the best whist contributing to the greater good of the community.
