Personal Statement
My name is Zack Burack and tennis is my passion. I am very enthusiastic to go to college in the U.S. and play tennis for a Division I, II, III or NAIA university. I am half American and half Japanese, but have lived outside the U.S. and Japan my entire life having grown up in Australia, Thailand and in Singapore for the past 9 years.
I started playing tennis at age five, but was hitting balls with a ping pong racket from age 2. I am currently ranked nationally in Singapore, but there have been limited tournaments due to the coronavirus health crisis so my ranking does not reflect well. As a 14 year old 8th grader I made my High School varsity Under 19A travel team at United World College (East Campus). We competed across Singapore and in tournaments internationally in Indonesia, Thailand and India. In parallel to playing on the Under 19A travel team, I was also Captain of the Under 14A squad. Now that I am in Grade 11, I'm Captain of the 19A team.
As a 9th grader I made the Under 19A varsity travel team again and was due to play tournaments in Phuket & Bangkok Thailand before they were cancelled due to Covid-19. Before the pandemic I played Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) Under 14 tournaments overseas in Penang & Ipoh Malaysia, Colombo Sri Lanka, plus in Kathmandu Nepal. Me and my Doubles Partner reached the Semi-Finals in Penang and Ipoh, while I had two top-16 finishes in Singles in Colombo and Kathmandu. Now I am working on my game and fitness as a 17 year old, with the objective to start qualifying for ITF junior events. I train at Tennis Inc. in Singapore plus have two private lessons per week with my coach Paul Ambrose who is a former New Zealand junior national player.
I am very committed to my tennis. In addition to my own training, I teach tennis part time to 5-6 year olds with SAVITAR which is one of Singapore's leading recreational tennis programs, plus have a few kids that I teach private lessons. I'm also a big fan of the ATP Tour and constantly watch all tournaments on both pay TV plus on Tennis TV. I also follow all the top players on social media.
I pride myself on having a positive mindset and a hard work ethic both on the tennis court and in the classroom. My father played Division I Tennis about 30 years ago and I hope to follow in his footsteps at a suitable program that fits my academic and athletic requirements. Thank you for your kind consideration of my profile here on NCSA.
