Matthew Wilhelm '19 Recruiting Profile

I have been playing sports all my life and always had the passion for competition.  My focus was baseball and basketball throughout elementary school.  My Dad introduced me to tennis in the fifth grade and realized that I loved the sport.  Even though my middle school did not have a tennis program, I continued to play tennis and realized that my passion for tennis was much greater than playing basketball & baseball.   

Starting my freshman year in high school, I decided to strictly focus on tennis.  Even though my game really wasn't well developed yet, I felt that I caught on quickly.   During my freshman year, I was number two on my team and finished 4th in the conference with my doubles partner.   I really feel like I hit my stride during my sophomore year.  Every part of my game was starting to come together.   My doubles partner and I won the Western Piedmont Athletic Conference and were Runner-Up in the Regionals.  Then we participated in the NCHSAA State Doubles Tournament.  Even though we lost in the 1st Round, I was really proud of my progress.  Then I continued to play USTA tournaments throughout the Summer and Fall.

I feel like my success so far has come from my work-ethic, determination, and athleticism.  I have learned that I am capable of anything that I set my mind too.  I have been raised to never give up, no matter the obstacle.  I want to continue my tennis career at the next level as well as find a major that I will be successful in.  The same passion that I have for tennis goes for the same for doing my best in school.  I still have a lot of growth left, but I would like to do it at your program.
