My Name is Joshua Asiedu-Akrofi or Josh Akrofi for short. I am a Senior at Valley Christian High School in Cerritos, California. I am a first generation American. My parents are from Belize and Ghana. Growing up in an immigrant household has taught me the importance of education and the value of hard work.
I have been told that from the time I could walk, I was always playing with a ball. I started playing soccer at 5 years old and I have never stopped pursuing sports in general. If there was sufficient time in the academic calendar, I would try every sport. I consider myself a versatile athlete. I play on my school’s Varsity Football Team (I am a kicker and wide receiver), on the Varsity Soccer Team (Left Forward, Left Mid and Center Back) and run on the Varsity Track Team (100m, 200m, 4x1 and 4x4). I also play club soccer. I am the Captain for my Varsity Soccer team.
I have always played soccer but found a love for Track in the 10th Grade. Although my school did not have a sprint coach until this season, I have improved my times significantly since starting track in the 9th Grade.
This year I had a personal record of 10.82 in the 100m and 22.14 in the 200m (this broke our school’s 52-year-old record). I was instrumental in my school winning our League Championship. In our League Finals, I won 1st place in the 100m and 200m. I was on the winning team for the 4x1 and the 4x4. I was named League MVP for Sprints and named as an Honorable Mentioned for our local Newspaper (the Press-Telegram) Dream Team. I also participated in CIF-SS Division 4 Finals for the 100m and 200m.
I work hard in each sport that I participate in. I am an enthusiastic and happy kid. My coaches would tell you that I always have a smile on my face. I am willing to put the time and effort in to reach my educational and athletic goals. My goal is to work in Sports Medicine and to obtain the best sprint times that I can.
I am a strong student academically and have completed over 40 hours of community service over the past two years and continue to seek opportunities to serve. This year I am doing year long Service-Leadership course at my school. These opportunities have helped me to develop patience, empathy, communication and leadership skills. I hope to make a significant contribution to any team that I become a part of.
