Personal Statement

Hey Coaches! My name is Colin MacKenzie and I am currently a Junior attending Novato High School. Part of my philosophy in life has always been pursuing the uncommon, as life is most fulfilling and rewarding when one is surrounded by challenge and hardship. This includes both my Track and Field and Cross Country careers in which I’ve taken on the role as the most competitive mid-distance runner on the team as well as my academics in which my natural curiosity has pushed me to learn as much challenging content as I can through various AP courses. Coming into High School I’ve had the difficulty of competing on a team that has consistently been rather small averaging thirty-five athletes in comparison to the other teams who often average around seventy-five kids. This paired with the fact that my team has had an uncompetitive record over the last couple of years and a school that has shown little enthusiasm towards their athletes, the circumstances certainly haven't been in my favor. However, part of being great means breaking the mold and doing things that many others aren’t willing to do. The nature of my team and my school only serves as another mode of challenge for me to overcome and has paved the way for me to develop a supreme level of discipline that has allowed me to progress substantially over my High School athletic career. I aim to continue to improve my discipline and work ethic with the end goal of bettering my times to the level of an elite high school athlete who is worthy of competing at the collegiate level.

  • Was seeded in the fastest heat of three heats with twenty-seven competitors in total. Overall felt like my pacing was fairly good. Came through the first 400m at 59 secs but the turns at this track are sharp and roughly 80m so you lose a lot of speed and the straights were 120m. It honestly messed with the entire field and I found myself moving into lane two as the momentum would carry us out of lane one since the bends were so tight. It also didn't help that I had an allergic reaction the night before so I had taken benadryl which while helpful, caused me to feel really tired and drained going into the race. I did what I could but admittedly can't be too upset with myself despite feeling like this was a missed opportunity for a pr in the 800m.

  • Felt pretty good the first couple of miles. This course is arguably one of the mentally harder ones as everyone feels really good and comes through the first mile pretty quickly as everything is flat. But afterwards some changes in elevation along with some harder surfaces like pavement and steep hills make for a really challenging shift in the race. Definetly was one of the parts of the race where I really tried to stay metnally tough and ensure that my pace didn't decrease much and tried to prevent anyone from passing me. Heading into the last mile you essentially repeat the some parts of the first mile mixed with some of the hills and elevation of the second mile which makes for a really difficult end to the race. Because your going through the same location multiple times it feels really daunting knowning exactly how much distance you need to cover towards the end. Ultimately I felt as though I ran pretty well though I had missed my previous pr that I ran at the P. Wilder Mariner Invitation.

  • Probably the most efficient I've ever ran in a Cross Country race. Made sure to watch my breathing and ensure that my form was ideal for the entire 3.1 miles. Came through the first mile calm but fast in a relaxed 4:58 mile. Then continued to watch my pace and form as I made sure to pass anyone who I could catch off gurard. I found myself pushing the pace for almost the entirety of the race yet it never felt like I couldn't mantain. At th 1.5 mile mark I made sure to start to turn over the legs more and as I approached the final mile mark I started to increase my stride more. When I came to the final incline I increased my turnover once again and made sure to power up the hill and use gravity to my advantage on the declines. Came through the finish with a big 5k pr of 16:44. Defintely my most impressive performances of the season.
