As a first generation African American, I have learned from my parents, the enormous opportunities that I have in this country, that are not available to most people my age in other countries. One of this is the tremendous outlet that sports provide for youths to blossom growing up. When I joined the Los Angeles Jets Track Club in 2010, it was meant to provide an avenue to burn away energy. However, in the many years that followed, I have learned focus, determination, fulfilment and how to be a team player.
It is important to me that I end up with the right coaches and the right program that will best grow me as an athlete and as a person. My new coach, Claudius Shropshire underscored this aspect of student athlete this year. While I continued my usual major track event of the 400 meters [individual and relay], my coach spotted my ability in the hurdles and put me to work. With his help and focus, I won the City Championships in the 110 meters and 300 meters hurdles, in my first year competing, and improved my time almost every meet. Earning an invitation to the State Championships, meeting all the many aspiring athlete and earning the honors of Captain of the Track and Field program at my school are a basis for me to aspire to greater things in the future.
With the strides I made this year, I know I have a lot of room for improvement and will bring value to any academic sports program. I intend to combine my passion in sports into my future careers . Which is why I intend to study, Kinesiology and sport medicine in college. The discipline that I have learnt as a student athlete is what I know will help me achieve my goals and be the best I can be.
