Personal Statement

My name is Bradford Ortlund and I am a 6'0", 170lb. senior at Maranatha High School in Pasadena, California. I am a four year Varsity Track and Field athlete specializing in hurdles and relays. I also enjoy participating in decathlons. I have demonstrated character and leadership as a team captain and in my Junior year I earned 'All CIF" honors and Olympic League MVP for sprints and hurdles, I completed the year competing in the Southern Section CIF Finals at Cerritos College and placed  fourth in the 300 intermediate hurdles and eigth in the 110 High Hurdles for Division 4. I think the 2011 season was a good one and is a reflection of my ability to overcome obstacles, to endure and to recover. My doctor discovered I had a large, juvenile inguinal hernia in March. I was given permission to finish the season and pushed through discomfort to achieve league MVP and get to Southern Section finals. I had surgery in June that went perfect and I have recovered fully and am training hard!

Starting my Sophomore year, I was named "All League" in both the 110 meter and 300 meter hurdles and advanced to the preliminaries for CIF Southern Section, Division 4. I improved on that my junior year and and made "All League" in both hurdle events as well as a member of the anchor leg on the 4x100 relay team. I am a versatile athlete and can run any short to mid distance events quite well. I have competed in two decathlons, one at Mt. SAC where I earned second place in the sophomore division and sixth overall. and As a Junior I competed in the Arcadia Invitational Multi's where I ran, jumped, vaulted, and threw against some of the best runners in the country. I finished 14th overall and had several pr's at that meet. I love track and field and can easily say that it is one of my passions in life. I give my all in practices and in meets and make it a point to encourage my teamates and keep the team pumped and ready to be the best they can be. I really enjoy the friendship and success we have as a team as a result of all of our hard work.

I played football at Maranatha for three years, one on JV and two years on Varsity. However, because of my passion for track and the goals I have set for myself I have decided to focus all of my efforts on track and field and train year round to hit these goals. As a Senior I have a few goals that I am going to see through this year, the top three would be to get a 3.5 and above this season, the achieve absolute domination in the hurdle and sprint events in the Olympic League this year, and reaching significantly higher personal bests due to the extra training I am doing. Also one of my other main goals is to compete in the California State meet this year.

For the past two years I have volunteered my time for the Unity Center, helping to load food for needy families during the holidays. This year I am an assistant coach for my youngest brother's Pop Warner football team. I recognize the importance of being an ambassador for my school and plan on continuing this tradition in college.

I am very eager to run at the collegiate level. Academically I am interested in studying in the fields of Communications, Biology, Kinesiology or Engineering. I am looking for a college or university that will help me develop in every aspect of life, not just the physical and mental aspects. I am a Christian and would definitely be open to attending a school that would help develop me spiritually and strengthen my love of my Lord Jesus Christ. I know that colleges, universities, and their coaching staff look to find people who will reflect well on them as a student and graduate. I can say with confidence that I will be one of those people.

If you think I would be a really good fit with your program, please contact me. Thanks for looking at my NCSA profile!
