My name is Dominic Gonzalez-Shelmire, and I am currently a senior at Gabrielino High School in San Gabriel, California. I am passionate about the sport of Track and Field specifically mid-distance and sprints. Track and Field started as just a sport I could add to my resume but quickly became a passion. I am consistently working to improve and excel in the sport and have been training throughout the quarantine/pandemic. It is my goal to earn a position on a college team where I can grow as an athlete while making significant contributions to the program.
During these challenging times, hard work, perseverance, and grit are necessary characteristics to have as an athlete seeking to represent a college/university on the track. I have demonstrated these characteristics and continued to be motivated by continuing to train throughout the shutdown. It is my hope that I will be able to have a season this year. My goal for this season is to hit a low 48 sec 400m and a low to mid-21sec 200m, and I am confident I will accomplish that with the work I am and will continue to put in. Should I be offered a spot on the roster of a college team, my goal is to hit a 45 sec 400m and a low 20 sec 200m. I believe with the right training and coaching, partnered with my passion, hard work, and perseverance, I will be able to accomplish these goals as well. I generally just want to be the fastest I can possibly be. When I was younger, being fast was the “cool thing” but for me, it became something more, something that I wanted to excel at. I enjoy being able to win for my team and contribute to our overall victories. Before I started running, I played soccer for about 10 years, but when I started track I instantly fell in love. The feeling of all of these athletes from different events and friend groups coming together to accomplish one goal of doing our best and winning fascinated me. As a team, you become a family, and I have enjoyed being a part of that.
My drive to succeed on the field is also evident in my academics. I currently have a 3.49 overall GPA, but my first semester of this year I have earned a 4.0, and I am working diligently to earn those same grades for the second semester. Some courses were not easy for me, but I have always been motivated to do my best. I value my education, and I am hoping to find a home at a university where I will thrive, grow, and connect with professors and students while developing and contributing to the school as an athlete. It is my hope and desire to continue my journey on the track into my college years.
Thank you for taking the time to review my profile.
