I twiddled my fingers, my whole body fuming, perspiration dotting my forehead. I struggled at the table, strewn with my math book and several worksheets. Overwhelmed by the amount of work I had to do, the tension in my body was affecting my head. I couldn’t think, but asking my parents for help seemed out of the question. There was no way of getting any homework done by myself. I slowly moved over to take a peek into the living room, hoping my parents weren’t busy. I saw my brother’s face swelling up as my Dad attempted to help him with his homework. “I can get through it,” I encouraged myself, “they’ve got enough to worry about.” I sulked back to my room while carrying the weight of my body and work load all by myself.
I've always been a pretty self sufficient person and allowing people to help me was hard. When I was 7 years old my parents signed me up for soccer with my siblings at a league called A.Y.S.O. It was new and exhilarating for a 7 year old because it was competitive and fast paced. This was a moment of recognition for me and my family because my whole future unrolled in front of our eyes.
This lead me into my track and field phase. Soccer was a breeze because out running everyone else was easy, but the down side was having to rely on other people the entire time. I had no problem with team work, but the school I went to never won. As a child it was extremely frustrated and naturally I gravitated towards an independent sport that allowed me to win and lose all because of me. All the work I did paid off and showed in the final result, so as I grew up track held my hand the entire time.
I've grown to accept help from others and balance helping myself. It would be an amazing opportunity to compete in college because it's a dream I've carried my entire life. I've never felt so passionate about something in my life, and being an addition to your team would be an honor.
