I never imagined that I would be a runner with an immense passion for running. Up until my sophomore year in high school, I played basketball. I also ran, but to stay in shape for basketball season and to relieve the stress that is built up during school. I initially began taking Long-Distance Track and Field and Cross Country seriously, at the beginning of my junior year. Coach assured me that if I did not give up during races and would show up to practice every day, my potential would lead me to become a good runner. I followed my coach's advice and decided to work as hard as possible so I could run good times. As I started running more, I decided to leave basketball as a hobby so that I would have more time to improve as a runner.
Ever since, I have dropped 3 minutes off of my first 5k when I was a junior and I set a personal record at almost every 1600m race in spring of my junior year. As Cross Country season is going on, my goal is to go from running an 18:53 to run a sub-17 5k race.
As I am running and chasing new personal records, running in college is something that I am looking forward to with eagerness. I don't want to abandon my passion after i graduate. Having the thought of running at such a high level is what pushes me every day. My athletic goals in college are to break 4 minutes in the 1600m and run longer races such as the 10k. I also have academic goals which are even more important to me. I want to graduate from the college/university's pre-medical track with a double major in Biology/Biochemistry. I will eventually apply to medical school and attend, in hopes of become a cardiovascular surgeon in the future.
Being an exemplary student is crucial in being a good runner. As a student in the International Baccalaureate program, I am always challenging myself with college-level classes. Being motivated in school will definitely shape my motivation for Cross Country and Track and Field. Slacking off and settling for mediocracy is not part of my morals and ethics.
